In the absence of light, the mononuclear complex Ru(CO)3(C2H4)(MeCN) trimerises to yield the novel tris-substituted cluster Ru3(CO)9(MeCN)3.

A wide and varied reaction chemistry may be expected for this cluster following from the extensive studies undertaken using the mono- and bis-acetonitrile clusters Ru3(CO)11(MeCN) and Ru3(CO)10(MeCN)2.
